I'm sorry if this is the wrong sub, I'm not sure where to post this.

My complex started pushing people to get tags renewed/plates taken care of, supposedly because the local government is pressuring them to do it. My car has expired tags, but I talked to the office manager after getting a warning sticker on my car about it. I explained the circumstances that led to the expired tags and the year-long process fighting to get those righted, so I could get the tags renewed. This process is ongoing and should be resolved early next week, if all goes well. It's all in the hands of the post office and bureaucracy at this point. They told me I wouldn't get towed after talking to them, and that they call before towing.

Fast forward a week, and my car gets towed and I was not contacted at all. I was furious, especially because there were plenty of out-of-state and local expired tag plates in the parking lot that were NOT towed. Not to mention the asshats who keep parking all day long in the accessible spot without a hangtag or a plate showing they should park there. Had to pay several hundred dollars to get my car out of the tow lot 50 miles away, missing half a day of work because they're only open 9-5 and they're not staffed, only by appointment.

I talked to the complex office, and initially they kept giving me all sorts of excuses for why it was that I was towed and not the others, that they don't police out of state cars, and that their process and communication with the towing company is still being sorted. I pointed out the out of state cars are not complying with state law requiring new residents to title and plate in the state, and that claiming to want to be equally enforcing the laws while ignoring other blatant law-breaking behavior is very puzzling, to say the least. I pointed out that I had been a good tenant, with no issues or complaints or late rent for years. All I left with was "the property manager will call you", and no guarantee the SAME thing won't just happen again next Monday.

Two hours or so later, I do get a phone call from the property manager, saying how sorry they are about the mix up, that it won't happen again, and that they will issue "points" for an amount short of the total I spent, in their own rewards program, that I can redeem for gift cards to the stores of my choice. Initially I was happier to hear that I would get something back after all, but now I'm a little worried about how sketch it sounds, getting money back from the complex in the form of gift cards. Not to mention that, redeeming the points in some stores costs actual points, so it costs me ~$15 of "rewards" to get a gift card for $250.

Should I try to see if they can discount the amount from my rent or something? Either that or cash/check? I'm just very weirded out now, with how they chose to make up for their mistake. Am I overthinking it?

Thanks for any advice or insight.
