Can anyone recommend a good book, program or course a graduated HS senior can learn the pitfalls of racking up too much student debt and basically learn how aweful being in that much debt can be?
I have heard of so many people well over $100k in debt because they they fell for the illusion that the academic society pushes in which they should pick the college that supposedly is the "best one for what they want to do” or it "just feels good, feels like the right one".
These kids come out with their Bachelor degree and over $100k in debt. A huge pitfall when starting out life. A more financially responsible kid could get that same degree and keep loans under $40k, some well under that.
We live in NY and she will be eligible for the Excelsior scholarship to help mitigate the cost if it's still around. Right now she wants to go to a school out of state. She can commute to University at Buffalo, a great school, and end up paying less that $20k total. Essentially, with our help, get her BS degree, and have no student debt.
I'm sure there are ton's of parents in this situation. Daughter just graduated HS, asked to take a gap year and work full time and then head off to college the following year. Because of the pandemic, like many students, she lost her enthusiasm towards studying and school work. Still did well, but hardly any serious school work last year and a half.
Im all for the gap year so we can things settle down with the pandemic and hopefully go back to more in person learning. And it gives her a chance to get her head in the game, as far as school work.
I refuse to co-sign ridiculous student loans.
HS students should be required to take a hard core course on personal finance, drilling it into theirs heads until they really understand because it's one of the most important lessons they can learn.
