Looking for some advice and won't try to bore you with details. I left my 2017 NY State return in the trunk of my car for about 2 years (not my best move I know). I finally mailed it a few months ago. I owed $700 and it had my bank account info to be directly taken out. I guess since it was so late they didn't take it out.

About a week ago I got a collection letter from "Performant Recovery Inc." saying they are responsible for collections on the balance. The company looks legit. I went on BBB and it seems some people did have an issue when they paid them they were not applying the amount appropriately with the IRS? I am not sure what to do I have had a bad track record dealing with these collections people. I am not worried about paying the balance, I want it over with before it messes up my credit (hopefully it hasn't yet). Should I call the IRS first and try to pay them or deal with these people??
