I'll try to make this short. As the title says, my mom passed away. Since for a few months I was living her with her prior to this, I decided to stay at her residency, though now everything, including the home is in my name. I called to have the accounts changed over - Duke Energy would not change over the account, but instead went in a really round about way and terminated my mother's services and opened up an account all in my name.

Because of this I now have two light bills! My mom's final bill was nearly 600 dollars (apparently she was on a payment plan or something that spread out the year's expected monthly costs into sections or something) and they want it due right now. My own light bill is 179 dollars, more more reasonable.

Now of course I plan on paying the actual active light bill first - but the problem is there's no way in hell I'd be able to pay nearly 600 dollars on a deactivated account in my mother's name. I might be able to put a small portion down of it, but really that's it. I briefly spoke to Duke Energy and their response as "I have 30 days". 30 Days will not help me magically find a spare 600 dollars.

Any help on what I should do? I don't know if I simply got ahold of the wrong person, but they refuse to let me put this defunct account on a payment plan. Should I call once more and see if I get someone more reasonable?
