Hello! I’m looking for some advice since I’m paranoid and thinking about nuking my whole account. As a note, I check my account every day and confirm all purchases with my husband.
Spotted a pending “apple.com/us“ charge on my joint credit card. I didn’t buy anything from Apple though I am a semi-regular consumer of new products. My husband didn’t buy anything from Apple because he wouldn’t even know what to buy or where/how to get it. I also asked and he said no.
I called the cc company (PNC) and they stated that it looked like a legitimate purchase from an Apple Store. I called the number on the charge and got transferred to various departments. Here’s where I may have been (definitely was) stupid: they asked me to confirm my card number so they could check all records for the card. I did it. I know I’m an idiot. If it makes anyone feel better today I’m a mega idiot because I repeated it back to them when they asked me to confirm...twice.
Then I realized...this might not be the right number for Apple. It might be part of the scam. They told me they couldn’t find any record of my card used for purchases recently and, in my paranoia, I told them THEY were the scammers and hung up.
I called the actual Apple support number and got a message verifying that I was speaking to apple support. So I asked them about the previous call and they stated that I had called them and they had a record of the call. They repeated back to me that they had no record of my account making a purchase or my cc being used for any purchases. They checked with the “iTunes” department, the “App Store” department, and the in-person sales department.
I called PNC back and they stated that rather than declaring the card lost or stolen I should dispute the charge on the card. The person on the phone stated that that would be the best path.
I have grown (you guessed it) increasingly paranoid and am trying to decide if I should just close the whole account.
Finally we get to my question: Is this the best path? Should I dispute the charge? Declare the card lost or stolen? Cancel the whole account?
Some notes: I have Apple Pay and the card set up is my debit card. I have the cc in my Wallet for online purchases. This card was set up through the PNC app. There are 0 other sketchy charges on that card.
