Title. My local supermarket sells sunflower seeds in the nuts/snacks section, £6/kg. I go to the garden section, they sell what look like basically the same seeds (shelled and everything), intended for use in bird feeders etc, for £2.27/kg.

The package says "not for human consumption", but what would be the difference in the production process which means the more expensive ones are fit for human consumption and the cheaper ones aren't? What's stopping me from eating the bird seed and saving almost 2/3 on the cost?
