The moderation pendulum swings all over the place, but I fear it's a bit too far on constricting right now. We haven't actually changed any of our base rules, but have tightened up on some in the post GME deluge of dumb posts.

I know /u/greytoc just made a post on DD guidelines, we're just about ready to roll out some new firm guidelines on what DD is appropriate and what is not. So stay tuned for that.

So, that said the volume of posts has decreased significantly here, a lot are being removed for very good reasons, but we're still thinking of ways to strike a nice balance (to be clear - quality of discussion is and will continue to be our primary goal with any rule). I regularly check the automod removal logs and 99% of the posts being removed are frankly just really generic advice requests or basic questions.

That said, I'd like to formulate some formal guidelines for differentiating between a post that should be in a daily thread and one that can have it's own thread. I'd like for sufficiently complex topics to be able to generate insightful discussion - this is an inherently subjective threshold so someone's gonna be mad about their post not making the cut, but I think formalizing some guidelines should help.

So, I was discussing this with /u/Emc87, and our initial thoughts were something along the lines of this: if you can google the answer to something it should not be a post here. But if you can demonstrate that you have done a fair bit of research on something and are having trouble connecting the dots, or having trouble seeing the mechanics behind a concept, then that would likely be a good post to open up for discussion.

This obviously creates a lot of room for interpretation - I've seen enough people in modmail arguing that "how do I buy stock" is a valid discussion topic that would help many people to know that we're not going to make everyone happy here. But I would like to see what thoughts everyone has as to putting a semi-formal framework on these ideas, so that we can point to something when deciding which posts will be sent to the daily threads and which can have their own post.
