I have an emergency room bill that I can’t afford to pay (I have no insurance) so I want to call and negotiate, but I’m not sure how to handle it. If, for example I have a bill for X amount of dollars and I call to negotiate and they offer to reduce the bill by Y amount, but it is still too much for me, do I agree (so I owe X – Y dollars) and then call again a few days later to try and get them to reduce the bill again by Z dollars. Or do I tell them that Y amount is not enough of a reduction (so I would still owe X dollars?) and tell them that I would call back? In the second case would I be essentially be starting over the negotiation (so I could possibly be offered a reduction less than Y dollars on my second call), or would I be able to tell them that a different employee already offered to take off Y dollars and that I would need a greater reduction? Sorry I have never negotiated before and I am very nervous about the call.
Also, how do you get proof that they agreed to reduce the bill, since we will just be talking over the phone. And if I start making payments in a payment plan, could I still negotiate a few months from now?
Thanks in advance.
