I recently started Roth IRAs for my kids (via Schwab), and I'm looking for the right kind of investment for these accounts. What I'm looking for:

  1. Strong long-term performance (short term volatility is irrelevant; we're looking at a 50-year timeframe).

  2. No further action, maintenance, or careful market-watching required until my kids decide to start pulling money out when they retire. I don't want my kids to have to fret/hassle about moving money, buying one thing, selling another, or redeeming some bond at a set point.

  3. Minimal maintenance fees/overhead. I don't want anything eating at their Roth IRA growth.

Right now, I'm considering Schwab's S&P 500 Index fund. Any thoughts?
