2 years ago I bought a house and land up in the mountains. When I set up my account with our local waste management, they told me it was going to cost about $35/ month plus an extra $10/ month because of the rough dirt road my property is at the end of. Then that first winter, I found out they won't even pick up at all if the dirt road is muddy, icy, or snowy which is pretty much most of the fall, all winter and a good chunk of the spring. So I canceled my service and started hauling my own trash to the dump. When I fill up one of the 55 gallon Costco trash bags, I'll just go put it in a big wooden trash dumpster I made out by our barn and every 3 or 4 weeks, I'll throw it all in the bed of my truck and pay $5 to dump it at the transfer station which is about 10 minutes away. Definitely not an option for everyone but I'm sure there are a few that could get some major savings doing this like I have!
