Hello, Reddit!

I recently gained admission to a Chemistry Ph.D. program (WOOh!) at UGA. They are offering me a 25k salary. I would be moving from California and wanted to know what steps I should consider when relocating.

I currently have taken my current saving into account, ~6k. I created a spreadsheet with potential housing costs, car payments, groceries, etc to understand how to live within my allotted salary.

After hearing back from current students, self transportation is a time-saving option and a stress reliever. I plan on getting financial assistance from my parents to purchase a reliable car that could get me to Georgia and so on. I think that the interest-free loan from my parents will impact my finances less than a bank loan given an emergency. Taking the possible down payment I can provide them, my monthly car payments would be within my budget.

How can I further prepare for a smooth transition and for those who have been in similar situations, how have you made a graduate salary stretch?

Thanks in advanced for any advice!
