Hey guys, hopefully this belongs here because it’s more indirectly related to money but here it goes.

I had someone come to my door claiming to be representing my energy company. They said they were adding credits for renewable energy use. Alright, I thought, why not. Without thinking at all, I let him see my utility bill. There’s no financial information or an SSN on it, so I thought it might be fine. He had me agree to something and then he was on his way.

Afterwards, I started doing some research and I’m pretty sure he ‘slammed’ me, and switched my energy provider. Needless to say, I contacted whatever company he represented by email (they’re called “Arcadia” apparently) and immediately asked for my account to be cancelled. I planned to call in the morning.

Is there anything else I can do to prevent any damage? If it helps I live in NY. I plan to contact my energy provider tomorrow as well, but I’m really not sure what else can be done or what’s at risk. I didn’t know about this kind of scam at all before, and didn’t know my utility bill was such a risky thing to show someone. Thanks for any advice, and yes, I’m an idiot. Lesson learned.
