I received a notice from the FICO score tab in the Discover app recently that my credit score is heavily impacted due to a derogatory public record. I am a student that used to be on a J1 visa for an internship while I was in the USA in 2019 and 2020, but I am back in my home country as my school wanted us to head back due to COVID. I read on other pages that most residents and citizens of the USA can obtain a free credit report from one of the 3 major credit bureaus by visiting annualcreditreport, but I was not able to do so online as I did not stay at any address for 2 consecutive years. I suspect that it may be due to a medical bill that was left unpaid by accident as I was told my insurance should cover it by the urgent care payment office, but I have no way of checking that as my phone number is no longer active. I tried calling the provided phone number on the website to request for a report too, but that was just an answering machine that brought me through a series of questions. It was useless since I no longer have a residential address.

I intend to head back to the USA to continue being employed with my previous internship company, but I am worried that my low credit score will make it difficult for me to find a place to rent or get a car for transport.

May I ask if someone knows a way for me to find out what is impacting my credit score for me to fix it?

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Desperate J1 Student
