Interested in a medium sized dog (25-40lb).

FINANCES (I live in NYC):

  • Salary: $84,000 (take home pay after taxes is $4,800 total for the month)

  • Rent: $2,000 (I live alone)

  • I have $20,000 in federal student loans. It's deferred now but monthly payments would normally be $300. Payments will resume in Sept I think? Not sure if loan forgiveness will happen.

  • Private student loans just under $30,000. Parent helps contribute $1000 per month and Ive been throwing $500-$1000 per month towards it.

  • $6,000 in savings/emergency fund. ($25-$30,000 is the goal)

  • I maxed out ROTH IRA every year since I started. No 401k or any other investments.

LIFESTYLE:

  • I work fulltime, 100% remote. I'll be able to walk the dog myself 3-4x a day which means I won't need to hire a dog walker or boarding.

  • I am set on adopting from a shelter like NYC ACC. Adoption fee isn't super high and they take care of upfront things like vaccinations/neutering. (I am aware you should still bring your pet to the vet ASAP after adoption) Also aware that normal vet checkups can be expensive as well as unforeseen emergencies. This is where I'd use my savings/emergency fund to pay. Considering pet insurance as well.

  • I live a pretty frugal/chill lifestyle. Most of my money goes towards housing, student loans, groceries. Even before the pandemic, I didn't dine out/order food that often or travel.

Not sure what other information I may be missing. Thanks in advance!
