I'm a first time homeowner and am not handy at all. My dad is super good at fixing anything and everything so it's instilled a spirit of industriousness into my bones. Unfortunately he did not instill the actual skills. I attempted to fix the front door lock myself and also my dishwasher. Both of these things seemed like easy fixes but ended up being a huge pain in the neck and actually costing me more time and money than had I just had these things outright replaced ( I did end up with a new dishwasher from the scratch and dent store). I guess the point is do not be ashamed of your limitations and hiring a professional to do work for you. I figured I would at least attempt to fix it and if I couldn't then I'd hire someone,. It honestly I will just be keeping the handyman's number close by.
