My parents just received a notice from a debt collector that an old utility bill of mine from last June in the amount of 79.87 has been sent to collections. This is for a rental property that had the utilities in my name for about ~30 days while I was in the process of selling it. I have an email containing the final bill from this utility company, and so far I haven't found a transaction from my personal accounting software showing it was paid, but I do have a transaction showing that the prior bill from that utility company was paid with auto-pay. Also, aside from the original email, I never received any notice (email or physical mail) that the bill wasn't paid or past due. I also don't know how they got my parent's mailing address, as I would have given them my current mailing address when I put the utilities back into my name.

I will call the utility company directly tomorrow to verify the bill is outstanding and get it paid if so.

However, I'm concerned about this getting reported to my credit history. I'm under contract for a house and due to close in mid-march. They just sent my mortgage application to the underwriting last week. My FICO score is 806 and my credit history is otherwise very good. How much potential is there for this to impact the terms of my mortgage, and what can I do to minimize it? Can I negotiate it to have this collections not reported or removed?
