I am blind.

I am a service dog user and I found out my dog has cancer. The treatment will cost around 5,000 dollars. I am going to another veterinarian tomorrow morning for a second opinion and to ask about options for financial help.

This would give me enough time to get another service dog assuming he will be able to work during this. If I don’t get treatment for him he will likely pass away in 1 to 3 months and likely will only be able to work for a most another month or two or until he is suffering and has to be put down humanly.

I will have to use a white cane until I can get another dog, which will decrease my independence.

I am 22 years old and I rent an apartment with my wife and she is 23 years old.

We have a combined income of 35,000 a year with 2,000 in living expenses a month. We have 50,000 in medical debt, 20,000 in student loans and 5,000 in credit card debt. We have 1,000 in a savings account.

My wife is encouraging me to get the treatments for my dog and to put it on a credit card if we can’t get the cash.

I’m thinking it might be better to deal with the loss of independence, which she doesn’t mind, to avoid going deeper into debt when there is no guarantee he will survive or be able to work and when he retires we plan to keep him as a pet.

Losing him would also be very upsetting for me emotionally. What should I do?

Edit: Not sure why I’m being downvoted...
