Hi there personal finance,
I’m in a niche field that doesn’t pay much. Despite having just finished my masters degree, I’m still making about 50k per year in the US in a major Midwest city. I was offered a rare opportunity to move to Iceland. The job pays around 50k USD or 6,500,000 ISK per year. This experience will likely give me a leg-up in the field 5-10 years down the line rather than staying stagnant in my current role.
I’ve done the math to discover that after taxes and healthcare expenses are taken into consideration, take home pay will be about the same. With over ten years of experience in the field, I was hoping for a pay increase rather than a lateral move (financially speaking). The person who wants to hire me mentioned that there isn’t much wiggle room in terms of salary, but there is some room to negotiate upfront expenses such as a relocation package. In my counter offer, I’m considering adding an annual travel allowance and student loan assistance as these are my two areas of most concern.
I’m looking for information about Iceland and living expenses, I know that it is an expensive country to live in. More importantly, I’d like advice and ideas for the types of upfront costs and allowances I could add to the job offer that are reasonable to include. Basically, how can I pad my offer package to make it comfortable for me to live there?
Thanks for your help!
