I currently live in Georgia making 14 an hour at a help desk job. Most of the jobs pay 30-40k or 13-17 an hour. I haven't seen much jobs that pay more than that unless it's a manager job with a masters and 5 years experience.

I've thought of moving to a more expensive state for more opportunity and things to do Ex: Massachusetts, Colorado, New Jersey, or Washington. However, most people here say it would be stupid to move to those states because the housing is at least 500k for a small 1 room apartment, and there's more taxes/higher insurance. But, there's more jobs in those more expensive states that pay more. Is having a higher salary worth the increase in housing, food, insurance, and taxes?

Also, it seems in my opinion the states with cheaper housing are cheap because no one wants to live there ex: abandoned coal mining towns in West Virginia, poverty ridden towns in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. It also seems these states have less opportunities, less things to do, and have more retirees, and lower quality educational systems.
