mid 30s single no debt
currently living in cheap and totally decent apartment in upzoned part of town
I'm currently doing the standard mid life crisis questioning of buying a house while single. I would only be interested in detached houses because to me a condo is the worst of both worlds (HOA and it's basically an apartment with noisy neighbors).
The absolute crappiest fixer uppers go for about 350-450k in my area which is about my spending limit with my current down payment savings and income. I'm very flexible on buying a small simple old house and have skills to do maintenance myself within reason. About all of the homes in this price range were built in the late 40s to early 70s with a variety of 'amateur' modifications and additions over the years.
I currently live in a very 'cool and interesting' part of town and would have to move to the boring suburbs to afford anything.
I save and invest all of my 'excess' income due to my rent being reasonable currently.
Do y'all see any reason to buy?
Should I just chill and enjoy my simple life?
My main reason to buy... I want a garage to work on cars. That's about it. Is that enough of a reason?
My dad's advice: Don't buy if you don't want to become a Home Depot regular... I think he's on to something.
