I'm sure TurboTax can be useful in certain situations, but there's stacks of the software being sold at my local Costco. It blows my mind that so many people are buying the damn thing.
It's incredibly expensive for no good reason. The last time I tested it wanted to charge over $100 when with the exact same information FreeTaxUSA asked for $12.
We also know it's a shady company from their attempts to hide its option to free file and wittingly deceive their customers. Hell, just last year an audit found that TurboTax (and others) charged over 40 million Americans for tax preparation that should have been free.
I could understand if the software was superior in some way, but it doesn't appear to be any more capable or less confusing than so many of the alternatives.
Is TurboTax seriously in business just because people are ignorant? It sounds stupid, but I can't think of any other reason for how they are even a thing, much less a multi-billion dollar company.
