So, the short of the situation is that come May or June, I planned on moving out from my grandfather's place to live on my own and my girlfriend's family is moving down south so she'll be without a place to live. We figured this, after dating for 2 years, that this would be a perfect time to try living with one another. We're both early 20's, although I'll be 25 come September.

Besides the common advice of living with a partner for the first time, I was actually looking for financial advice. I'm currently bouncing around looking for apartment (and house rental) rates in the area and its not a cheap market at the moment! One bedrooms in the cheaper areas are hovering around $900 to $1000 a month before utilities. Lucky for us that I have a lot of furniture in storage so that'll cut down on furnishing heavily.

Here's a bit of a rundown of our financial situation:

  • I take home about $3400 a month
  • She takes home around $1600
  • We plan on splitting finances on a 66/33 basis for shared things (food, rent, utilities)
  • No need for cable, just internet
  • No excessive dependencies like cigarettes or heavy alcohol consumption
  • We'll both have around $10k saved up each by the time we get an apartment/rental house

What rental price range do you think is appropriate for a financial situation like this? Should we perhaps look for affordable house rentals to gain some maintenance experience? Is it smarter to live closer to her work since I'll be working from home for the foreseeable future? Just looking for general advice from you guys on this next step in my life. I'm super excited but I love to plan ahead, so thank you in advance!
