I live in Melbourne on the disability pension. I also care full time for my dad (he has the same condition as I but more advanced). We needed to furnish a house quickly, like everything down to dishes. Went to an auction house and the furniture goes consitently cheap. Managed to get everything we needed - tv, tv unit, nice leather couch, beds and bed frames, pictures for the walls, coffee tables, bookshelves etc including delivery for under 2000. Everything at these auction houses has been vetted and are usually in really great condition. Most people at the aucrion houses arent there for the furniture so you can get some great bargains! Alot of our furniture were antique and make our house look lovely! I know 2000 sounds a lot but got so much stuff :)
