Following the death of my wife last year, the estate attorney who helped settle things suggested I check for any unclaimed funds held by the state in her name. I didn’t follow through on it then. I was furloughed a few months ago, which has been pretty fantastic if I’m being totally honest, but it got me to take stock of my finances. I remembered the unclaimed funds thing, and it turned out that, of the four states I’ve lived in over the past 20 years, I had a little over $160 worth of unclaimed funds between two of them. They looked to be returned deposits and refunds from overpayments that didn’t get forwarded to my next address. It’s not a ton of money, but that’s more than a week’s worth of groceries for us. It only takes a few minutes to look yourself up and you could find some money out there in your name.
