My wife and I had our third kid (others are 7 and 4) a couple months ago and some of the related medical bills are starting to come. Checking over my EOB’s it is looking like my wife will have around $5000 in bills just related to the birth, which is her out of pocket max. She has insurance with a $2k deductible and 20% coinsurance, yet she is still hitting the $5k number, which seems outrageous to me. I checked over the EOB’s and there may be a few hundred that I can dispute but nothing huge. It’s been four years since I had a kid and I don’t remember it being this expensive. Between the hospital, doctors, anesthesia, etc., it’s damn near $20k (paid, not charges) with us paying $5k to have a baby.

Financially, we do okay, but we are middle class. I had a vasectomy that was $1,100, so the medical expenses are very high this year. I’m thinking about calling the hospital to see if they would take less than our billed amount. Have any of you had any luck with negotiating medical bills like this? Is there anything to say other than, “I don’t have $2800 to pay you, will you take $2000?”
