I’m 23 and just out of college and working two jobs while living at my parents house because my chosen field is heavily impacted by COVID. When I applied for a credit card this summer, I checked my credit score and noticed that it was lower than expected and that there were around $60,000 in credit card debt that I definitely didn’t accrue. I was added as user on my Parents credit card when I moved off to college in case of emergencies and I almost never used it. My folks think that because I am listed as a user on the card that the debt they accrued due to some hard times a few years ago is also in my name.
After saving as much as I can from my jobs (I make about $2300 a month before tax) for a while, I’ve decided that I need to move out ASAP and buy a cheap car as the situation both Family wise and COVID wise has gotten worse. The thing is, this debt I have in my name is bringing down my credit score and I’m worried I won’t be able to be approved for a lease or a loan for a car until it improves and my folks refuse to address the debt being in my name and I have no idea how I would go about doing something about it myself if there is even anything I can do. I’m completely lost on the subject of dealing credit card debt and I’m trying learn on my own so any advice is appreciated.
