Taking a quiet moment from Christmas baking to write down something fresh in mind: although this sub often discusses buying ingredients in quantity and about hacks for bulk storage, we rarely discuss hacks for saving time in using those ingredients.
Here are a few tricks. If you know of more then please add them.
-
Extra kitchen towels - spread one out on the counter before starting to prep or mix anything that's likely to be messy. Saves time on cleanup.
-
Extra measuring implements - store the measure you use most inside the ingredient container. If you're usually measuring cups for flour, just keep a full cup measure in the flour bin all the time, etc.
-
Extra cutting boards - we own five plastic cutting boards of various sizes and they fit into a 2" wide space at the edge of the counter. Which is hugely convenient instead of stopping to wash one board all the time.
-
Baking sheets - if sheets for cookies/biscuits aren't double thickness already then buy them in pairs and nest them while baking. That air space between layers helps to distribute heat evenly and results in fewer burned baked goods.
-
Baking parchment - not technically a double up yet I use it whenever feasible because they make cleanup so much easier.
-
Spatulas - with two or three spatulas there will pretty much always be a clean one.
-
Wooden spoons - also useful to have clean backups.
-
Magnetic wall mounted kitchen knife holder. Also good for holding small cheese graters and anything else metal. No need to hunt through drawers; just grab and use.
