I moved into an apartment at the end of August. It's a small building and all of the tenants know each other and are chatty. My downstairs neighbour has been complaining to the resident-owner-manager that her electric bill is much higher now than last year. The owner has checked the outlets and wiring to make sure nothing new is running on her electricity. The only differences in the building are me living upstairs and the unit next to her being vacant.

I finally got my electric bill for Sept-Nov, which includes 12-month history and average, and I'm using less than 25% of the electricity that the last tenant used. I don't run a/c or heat unless the temperatures or humidity get extreme, which means maybe 3 or 4 hours in the last three months. (I also don't cook, especially in the last few months because I've been getting lots of takeaway to support local restaurants. I don't use the electric hot water heater much, because I usually shower at the gym.)

Is my lack of heat really having this effect on the neighbour? Is this just really bad insulation between apartments?
