First post here!
After years of being careless with food dollars, I'm gradually reigning it in (along with other budgetary areas). I set a budget in November with almost arbitrary amounts in each budgeted area, largely to see where our money does and does not go. Specifically with food, I set the budget for $600.
Edging into January, I'm ready to try to shrink that amount. It's myself, my husband, and our teenager in the house. I generally follow a keto way of eating; husband and teen eat whatever I bring into the house. So, here are some sort-of goals I'm setting for January:
- Actually shop grocery sales. I know it's a no-brainer, but I've not been doing it. I'll create our menu for the week and shop for that (which was an improvement unto itself).
- Stop buying seasonings/spices that I'll likely only use 1/4 tsp of for one specific recipe. Part of what prompted this post was going into my space cabinet to see if I had ginger powder, Chinese 5 Spice, dried sage, and mustard powder for a fried chicken recipe. Yes, I did...and all expired 3-7 years ago. So I cleaned out the spice cabinet and decided we're seasoning the chicken with salt and pepper instead.
- Buy more whole chickens for roasting; it turns into at least a couple of meals.
Now, off to read more and be inspired by others :)
