I'm currently in the process of transitioning into a high COL area. I won't go into all the specifics as to why I chose this city in particular, but I'm currently in an AirBnB in San Diego until January 1st. I've gotten a job at a Starbucks, and I'll be earning 13/h full time (we haven't set up my exact schedule yet, but I'm assuming that'll be 40h/week).
I've already been subscribed to some roommate websites for awhile, but since I arrived now, I'm looking into these opportunities again. The lowest range tier seems to be 600-800, with much fewer options closer to 600 than 800. There's a lot more options between the 800-900 range. But I'd be earning 2250/mo. I'm taking a shot in the dark, but assuming I might lose a certain amount in taxes, I might have 2000 left, which divided by 3 is around 650 (rounded slightly down) for rent and utilities.
I feel like I'll probably just have to let rent weigh more than 1/3 wether I like it or not. I have also been looking at Craiglist, but honestly, the prices haven't been all that different. I don't know if there's a source that I'm missing in terms of getting better prices, or if it just is what it is? I'm already totally settling for having 2-5 roommates here.
