We know about frugal vs. cheap, and this is a frugal vs. external pressure question. I'm of the mind that function outweighs form. An end table is for my drink and snack, not a piece of artwork. I have a completely furnished and decorated place. It is my last rental before buying, so I am waiting to replace furniture as to not move it twice. Today, my mom said I should get nicer things "so guests feel comfortable." I didn't know what to say besides, "those who know me and visit know I'm frugal. I'm not buying things just for occasional visitors. It's my house." I've never been of the mind set of keeping up, showing off, flaunting money, or the like. But now that I'm buying, they're pressuring me into renting in a nicer neighborhood, seemingly just to look better and again, "so people will want to go to your house." I live in an area that is not the best or the worst. Pretty simply, I live within my small means. So how can I reconcile this difference in opinion? Thanks for reading.
