I recently was sent to the ER with an infected, perforated ulcer. Due to the size of the ulcer and the severity of the infection, I was told I needed emergency surgery. Within the hour I was put under for my surgery. After my surgery I was admitted into the hospital for a little over a week. It has now been just over a month since I was discharged and I got a bill from the hospital for over $53,000. My insurance is claiming, because the hospital was out of network, they will not cover any of the bill. It was my understanding that, in emergency situations, insurance would cover any hospital, even out of network. At this point, I have no idea what to do. There is no way that I can afford a medical bill that costs more than both of my vehicles.
