To anyone subscribed to this subreddit, I strongly recommend reading the book 'Timeless Simplicity' by John Lane. You will find many of your deepest feelings and convictions eqloeuntly explained in ways you didn't know possible. It fits the ethos of this subreddit in many ways.
Below are 5 random quotes from the book that I wanted to share with you all.
#1: Redefine Success
"In a capitalist society, money is generally considered the primary measure of value. This is because the maximization of returns on financial capital is one of its defining objectives. Competition, individualism and material consumption are therefore nurtured as favoured cultural norms. Levels of income, stock prices and the gross domestic product (GDP) have thus become the measure of progress and success."
#2: Prioritise Fulfilment
"A fulfilled person is one who has explored his or her capacities and looks back with satisfaction at a life enriched by personal discoveries; an unfulfilled person is often one who has become over-dependent on external stimuli."
#3: A 'Simple Life' isn't a Predefined Standard
"Voluntary simplicity is not amenable to measurement; it cannot be quantified, as, for example, a certain level of income or a certain number of possessions can be. It is and has always been an attitude of mind, not a prescription of an absolute standard."
#4: The Path to Happiness Doesn't Exist
"Experience teaches that happiness can only be attained as a by-product of other aims. Strive to help others, strive to give expression to your innate altruism, strive for the fulfilment that transcends your individual egoistic self, and you may be blessed with contentment. Never expect to find it by the direct route."
#5: Time Waits for Noone:
"If you have somehow failed to figure out your special gift, or maybe failed to break through the cultural barriers that prevent its realization, have no fear. Have the courage of those who have already done so, and take your life in your hands. There’s a kind of insanity in continuing to waste yourself, suffering long unproductive years for the sake of commitments you entered into at a younger age and which you are now too busy working (and commuting) to enjoy."
I have many more quotes but picked a random 5 that I hope others can benefit from.
I hope you enjoy them!
