As I was buying $2.99 worth of applesauce in CVS tonight, I realized how much money I have saved by simply washing my hair with cheap foods found in my kitchen.
Yup this sounds crazy but hear me out.
Tldr - r/NoPoo
I stopped washing my hair with shampoo/conditioner back in May. I was spending $120+ every couple months on nice shampoo/conditioner, and felt like I was constantly washing my hair - it would get greasy/limp/gross within 24 hours. My hair takes forever to dry, and I was planning my life around when I could wash it next. Ugh.
Thanks to Reddit, I found r/NoPoo, and boy howdy! Now I’m washing my hair 2-3 times/week, using cheap rye flour most of the time, and occasionally doing a ‘mask’ with applesauce, or rinsing with apple cider vinegar. Rye flour. Applesauce. Apple cider vinegar. All are a heck of a lot cheaper than shampoo/conditioner, and much healthier for you and the environment. And my hair looks great! It doesn’t smell at all, in fact my husband says it smells better than before.
The most money I’ve spent on hair care in the past 5 months is a $14 boar bristle brush (which is very helpful to redistribute your natural oils, and should last for years). Other than that it’s been $3-5 for bulk rye flour (from the natural food store), $2.99 for applesauce (removes waxy build up from hard water) and a negligent amount of ACV that was already in my cupboard.
That’s roughly $22 for 5 months of hair cleaning, and $14 of that was a one-time investment (the brush). At this rate I’ll be spending $12-15 on hair care/year, and that’s a high estimate.
Best thing, is r/NoPoo works for basically every hair type! It can take a while to learn what your specific hair needs, and there is a “transition” period as your scalp kinda freaks out because it’s not being stripped of oil any more, but if you can make it thru the transition period, it’s absolutely worth it. I keep linking to r/NoPoo because it’s a great community of super helpful people who are happy to help share tips/tricks to get your hair looking amazing.
