I've never received a letter from a collections agency before, but I want to do everything in my power to make sure my credit isn't affected.
The short story is I canceled my Spectrum service last month and the rep told me there was nothing else I needed to do. Then I got the letter about 'equipment charges' and a modem still being in my possession. So I returned the equipment this morning and then spoke with Spectrum support again, but they said they couldn't do anything and I need to speak to the collections agency directly.
From a brief amount of research, I understand that it's best not to pay the debt as it will show up on my credit report as a paid collections account. Many opinions stated instead to dispute it.
What advice would you give me to resolve this with the collections agency with minimal impact on my credit score?
