Hey guys! I am new to Reddit and not sure if something like this has been posted. I thought this might be an appropriate sub for the content.
There's a nonprofit in my community known as the Gleaners. It is historically a Christian organization, though our Gleaners hub never talks about religion and accepts anyone who wants to be a member (as it should be). The food comes from grocery stores cannot sell it (sometimes dented cans, sometimes produce "on the edge," sometimes just stuff that isn't selling) extra yields from farmers, abundance from fellow gardeners in the summer, and other food donations. It's kind of like Imperfect Foods, but a better deal, and you get to physically choose everything yourself (and some of it is from nearby farms).
How it works: Members pay a monthly fee (ours is $40) and commit to doing 3.5 hours of volunteer work per month as well. Sometimes volunteering is driving to a store/farm to pick up food; sometimes it's helping set the food out in the market. There is also a thrift store component that accepts donations and gives the stuff out freely to members.
This is what I picked up for myself today:
There are also meat and dairy options for non-vegans.
It cuts down on food waste, is suuuch a great deal (all this food would cost me way more than I could afford!), and is a great community-builder. I recommend checking if you have one in your city.
I really believe they should be in every city everywhere, and maybe they already are, but I was blown away when I saw how awesome it is and my wish is for everyone to have this resource! <3
