I'm a greasy person (physically, not mortally), and I love white bedsheets. They don't stay white for long though, because my greasy face and hair turn them all yellow! I've read plenty of suggestions to use Borax, blueing, or hydrogen peroxide, but I have none of those at home. I do, however, have Dawn dish soap (I think it's sold as Fairy brand in some of the other Commonwealth countries), and baking soda.

Fill up a suitably sized container (I used a bucket for my pillowcases, and my bathtub for my sheets) with hot water, add a bunch of dish soap and baking soda (online said 1/4 cup of soap and 1 cup of baking soda, but we're washing sheets and not baking a soufflé, so I just dumped stuff in until my heart told me that I was set), toss in your dirty sheets (not just white sheets, darker ones get grimy too, and I've also used this to clean the dirty collars of my shirts), swish them around a bit, and then let em soak. A few hours, over night, whatever your heart desires (but longer is better). When your heart tells you that they're done, or you need your bathtub, give em a bit of a rinse, and then wash them as normal. Add some vinegar in the fabric softener place of the machine (instead of softener) to help break down the last of the grime. If they're really stained, do a vinegar wash first to help get rid of stuff that might be coating your sheets and keeping the grime trapped.

If they were really yellow, they probably won't look brand new, but they will look better than before, and if they were only a bit yellow, they'll look very impressive!
