Despite the pandemic, I recently left my full-time job for a host of reasons -- it had started to get stressful (long story), they started requiring mandatory overtime, and the schedule was difficult (third shift). I have over a year's worth of expenses saved, so I can take my time to find the right position.
After relaxing and decompressing for a couple weeks, I updated my resume and began looking at jobs. The thought of returning to another full-time job is deflatingly unappealing. Since my lifestyle is simple, expenses are low, and I have no debt, I am thinking I can get away with working just part-time. Has anyone else done this, specifically single adults?
My math works out like this: to meet my expenses with a little left over for savings, I could live on about $1100 a month (net). For a year that would be $13,200 (net). Estimating that my net is about 80% of gross, this would mean needing a gross annual income of $16,500.
$16,500 / 52 = $317 weekly gross needed
At $16/hr (the wage of my last job), I could work 19.8 hrs/wk to meet the goal.
At $14/hr, I would need to work 22.6 hrs/wk
At $12/hr, I would need to work 26.4 hrs/wk
If I were to find a job with a higher wage than my last job, I could work fewer hours. At $18/hr, for example, I would only need to work 17.6 hrs/wk. But the likelihood of finding a higher wage role with lower stress is probably slim. At the same time, maybe I could handle stress better if I worked fewer hours? Hmm!
What do you guys think? I would consider a full-time job if there were something I really wanted to do, but I don't feel "passionate" about anything other than lounging around, reading books, going for walks, listening to music, visiting with friends over coffee, and being kind of a bum. :) (I'm in my 40s and I know this much about myself.)
