I’ve just graduated high-school and I’m enrolled in a french university, I’m leaving by the end of July.
I live in North Africa and by my country’s standards, my family is financially confortable, our household income ( about 3200$ a month, after paying taxes) is more than sufficient here . The thing is , in France, it isn’t. I will only get about 650€ a month ( transferred directly to my bank account) and after paying rent , I will only have 330€ left , a lot of foreign students in France apparently don’t even get that much money after paying rent ( I will live in Montpellier) .
my parents will pay for everything and they’ve made me a saving account ( I have about 8000$ ) but they refused to open it saying that it’s for emergencies or important stuff, such us buying my first car /house/starting a project,(they will send 600$ annually to my savings account when I leave the country, just in case I end up needing more than 8000$) , I never had any pocket money or anything since my parents would always give me more money than needed when I leave the house and I give them the rest ( eg: giving me 50$ when I just want to have lunch with a friend , knowing that restaurants are really cheap here and 50$ can feed a family of 5) . I’ve been to Europe before and I know that it’s more expensive there.
I’m kind of stressing out and worried that I won’t handle money well , I have the right to have a student job but I won’t have time for it especially since this first year is very selective and requires a lot of work ( kind of a pre med) + my parents won’t let me work on my first year ( I can work after it though)
I would really like to hear your advice on how to handle my money. Do you think that I should ask my parents for more ? They monthly pay 100$ for my brother’s school + 200$ for tutoring, on average, they spend 200$ on groceries + 124$( Netflix/ spotify/ wifi..). They own their home so no rent to be paid, they help their siblings and parents from time to time but I don’t know how much money they spend on their families . We live in a small town so they don’t go out , they save the money that’s left for our holidays ( we call them the “big holidays” since we go to foreign countries, we spend more or less 4000$ and we usually only have one each year) .
