Overview: REI will email you a $20 coupon to offset the $20 cost of membership if you spend at least $50 in-store or online. The offer started 5/26 and ends 6/15. Probably more accurate to say it's "effectively free" since you still have to spend money and go through a few steps.
How it works: Add a purchase of at least $50 (pre-tax) plus the membership to your cart. Without having to enter a coupon code, you should see "New Member Bonus Card" added to your cart. They'll email you a $20 Digital Member Bonus Card that can be redeemed within 30 days.
Membership benefits: Lifetime access to discounted classes/events/bike shop prices, etc. plus occasional coupons like 20% off full-price items/20% off outlet items. They also offer an annual member dividend "estimated" to be worth 10%. More on that here.
Notes: I already tried adding the $20 membership and a <$50 item to see if a combined ~$50 cart price would trigger the discount. It didn't work. REI's anniversary sale ended 5/25 and most sale items went back to full price. A lot of stores are closed but they're doing store pick-up (I tried it today and it was pretty efficient). They ship for free with a $50 min order. Hope this helps.
