How do you respond when people ask you about your financial position, retirement goal, debt, etc...

Growing up my parents (who were poor) told me that people don't discuss money. What you made, your debt, and retirement planning were for you and the person who prepared your taxes. My employer has a publically accessible website where all employees' wages are posted. It seems odd to me but there's no option to opt out.

I don't like to discuss money because my wife and I are debt averse DINKs who want to retire before we're 50. We live like hermits, cook 95% of our own food, and live kind of minimalist lifestyles. I've had coworkers call me out that I "must be loaded" because I pack lunch every day.

So my question is; is it now socially acceptable to discuss money, and do you discuss money with friends or coworkers? If so what points will you divulge?
