So I've been dealing for years with my parents claiming me as a dependent on their taxes and claiming my education credits as well even though I've always paid my own rent, education, food, etc since I started college and they've never helped me. I tried to stand up to them (aka ask politely why they were claiming my expenses when they didn't pay for any of them and I rented my own apartment, etc) a few years ago but they yelled at me, bullied me, and called me selfish because they'd get more money than I would until I gave into them. I'm now a college graduate and have a decent-paying job (other than the fact that Corona just got me rolling-furloughed) and it's really bothering me that I feel they're taking advantage of me and reading up on it I think what they're doing might actually be illegal. My friends have been telling me that it's not okay for years but I'm scared of my parents who are rather manipulative and emotionally abusive (and sometimes physically). I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions/comments.
