Examples are big oilfield companies like Shell, Exxon, BP, which are now yielding >7% dividends, and Canadian bank stocks which are above 5%. There's definitely a lot more industries like this out there, and I'm only listing those which I'm somewhat familiar with.

These are very established and stable companies who will undoubtedly still maintain profits (especially Canadian banks) even in the worst possible case scenarios of a global pandemic (e.g. 3% death rate and 3 billion people infected).

Am I missing something here? or are these stocks massively on sale right now? How often do companies actually cut dividends, and if so, for what reasons?
