Laid off and crunched the math. I was already living paycheck to paycheck and need to downsize our living expenses before I need to turn to debt in order to stay afloat. I am moving in with a coworker who is letting me rent her basement with my family until the COVID situation hopefully gets better and I'm back at work. It will be $700 less per month than the apartment.
I spoke with someone about breaking the lease but as stated in the OP, they want me to pay 85% of the rent and maintenance fee until they find a new tenant ON TOP OF paying to break the lease. They have a lot of empty apartments, and I'm afraid they'll never find a tenant before my lease is up. I can't afford this. My only option is to walk out at this point.
