As my title reads, I’m divorced. When I filed I told my ex if it was uncontested I would pay my fees and that would be it. We had zero financial obligations to each other and owned no property. We only had a child. He was abusive and in and out of jail and ended up dragging out pretty simple divorce out for 11 months. I had an attorney, he didn’t. Since he kept racking up my fees, the judge ordered him to pay all my attorney fees. It’s in the decree. He didn’t pay them, spent three years in prison for assaulting me after the divorce was final and is about 25,000 in child support arrears. I know this sounds totally white trash. After he got out of prison he tried to get custody of our child. I hired my attorney again and paid back $3000 of the original amount that was owed so I could be represented. Nearly 3 years of him taking me back to court over and over because of child support or trying to get more custody, the bill ballooned to over $11,000. At the time I was single and working but not focusing on those monthly payments because I thought I’d have time or he would pay or whatever. It was my fault for not paying. My question is, after all this time, it’s in collections racking up interest and I don’t know what to do. I’ve tried disputing it with the credit bureaus and explaining it’s not all my debt but they just sent me the copy of my original paperwork that said I would pay fees. How can I remedy this? How would he ever pay for this? I don’t have enough money in savings to even try to negotiate a lower fee. Do I have any hope in resolving this? TL:DR I owe money for attorney fees that aren’t 100% mine. What can I do?
