I am the third person in my family by the same name in the last 3 decades. My grandfather, father, and I share the same name. My grandfather died and a bill occurred by our name at his death. I was reported dead in 2015 on this bill and it affected my credit negatively. If I knew about it I would have paid it ... (its not a big one) I recently went to the bank to pull a credit report from Equifax just to see where I am at. I am in a good place because of work and marriage but was looking to see what my good debt to bad debt ratio was, I never buy anything with credit and normally don't need it. I spent a few hours on the phone with the credit viewing company to no avail. What are my next moves? I feel like a birth certificate and current drivers license should fix it but I can't even get to that point with these people. I also am aware that after a number of years it has been sitting at this point that it could be just as bad to pay off the debt and could be better to leave it as a charge off.
