I have just moved into a 1962 ranch that has plaster walls. I am trying to hang a shelf on an exterior-facing wall below a window, approximately 8 inches below the window itself. The exterior of the wall is brick and vinyl siding. I have been told by a contractor that my walls are probably rock lathe and not wood lathe, but I assume I should still be able to drill though it.I tried drilling into a stud below the window but even using a masonry bit I couldn't drill into the stud. I tried 3 different studs. Then I tried going in-between two studs and the drill goes through but the plaster around the hole crumbles away, leaving no purchase for the anchor. I am scared to try a larger drill bit for a molly or toggle bolt and risk damaging the wall even more. How can I prevent the plaster from crumbling around the hole? Is it possible to drill into the stud with a different bit? Or am I just trying to hang things in the wrong spot? I'm not sure I understand the construction of the wall even with my research on Google. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/37cRww7
