Hi there, going into a phone interview and I've always struggled with interviews in the past around a few questions: why did you leave your last job? what kind of compensation are you expecting? why are you applying for our company/what brings you to want to work with our company?

These questions kill me.. Left my last job because money went missing and I was the highest level manager on that day so I was fired. Left the job before that because management was stealing and harassing employees, which I reported and nothing happened.

Compensation questions are weird. I do the research that I can, but every time I do, I always found myself lowballing myself. I'm afraid to ask for more and not get a job, but if I ask for what I think I deserve with my experience, it might be too high.

What brings me to companies are the jobs. I know people want to hire people who are excited about working with X or Y company, but honestly, a job is a job and I'll do the best work I can in the job I go to, no matter what the company is.

What do you guys do with these questions? How do you either respectfully dodge these questions or make a response that is "good enough" to get the job?
