So I’m lucky enough to be insured. I know that is not the case for many Americans so I don’t want to come across like I’m ignoring that.
But I was having trouble justifying a gym membership. I think I was using being frugal as an excuse not to get back in shape. I heard somewhere that some insurances will help cover that cost, so I checked it out.
While my insurance doesn’t cover everything, I was able to sign up for this thing called “Fitness your way” which basically gives me access to a bunch of facilities for $29/month. Not a small amount and certainly gyms like planet fitness are cheaper, but this means that not only do I have access to a chain type gym, but there’s a workout center on my street that’s included, so I can also go there for unlimited classes! AND the enrollment fee was much cheaper than what the gyms charge (mine wanted $89, plus a yearly fee of $40 on top of a membership!) and there’s no term obligation, so I’m not stuck paying this for a year and can cancel at any time if finances change.
Also, it tracks your gym visits, which is important because if I can prove to my insurance provider I went to the gym X number of times a month, they’ll reimburse me $300 a year! So when I get that check at the end of 2020, I’ll have been paid back for all but 2 months.
I don’t think all insurances do stuff like this, but it’s worth a look :)
