As a preface I should mention that +95% of all my investments are in ETF's or Funds, with the vast majority in VTI/VTSAX with a little VGT, VDC, etc... thrown in. I don't believe I have any grand stock picking ability. I don't even make a trade per year so I am very much buy and hold.

In 2011 I bought MSFT because I had just restocked my office with new computers that all had Windows and Office. I bought LMT since we always buy new weapons, etc... Both of these are over +400% when the S&P is at +218%. I bought AAPL when my wife and her friends had to have the iphone. Last year I bought AMD because my son told me none of his friends wanted to build with Intel anymore. It's up over 100% this year.

None of these purchases were a significant amount. A few thousand dollars at most. Everything else goes into the Funds and ETF's.

How do you guys balance out individual stocks with your portfolios? I enjoy the idea of researching once something hits me as worthwhile, but as mentioned, I know I'm not a grand prognosticator...it's just fun. There have been a few duds along the way as well.
